Notes/Discussion:
- Google Earth session discussion writeup by Ming: John Evans and Sam Bacharach voiced opinion that we should be more proactive in saying we want Google Earth to implement OGC standards and that we should have a position on this before our discussion with Chris Kemp. That we should shape NASA’s collaboration with Google Earth. That we should distinguish a statement of position vs a discussion of questions.
- Rich doesn’t think it’s necessary to have a statement of position. Yonsook said it is too early to have a statement of position. This is just the initial discussion for the collaboration.
- John volunteered to revise Ming’s writeup for the Google Earth session. SPG is encouraged to comment on the revision via email.
- Discussion of the draft agenda for the SPG sessions at the Nov 14-16 ESDSWG meeting. Big question of HQ participation. Who is coming? If only one person from HQ attends, we need to know when that person will be there and then shorten the HQ session. Rich will contact Frank Lindsey and ask him about the HQ attendance at the Nov meetings.
- Process discussion may be better on Tuesday, after the HQ session. Extend the agenda 30 minutes to fit in all of the process discussion.
- Put the Google Earth session on Wednesday. Rich will confirm with Chris which days he will attend the SPG meeting.
- Tues evening music splinter – interested SPG members & friends/colleagues will go into DC (Adam’s Morgan) to a place Siri Jodha found out about for live music & food.
- Helen Conover reported on the HDF5 RFC status – a revised usability survey has been produced. This survey will be given to the attendees of the HDF workshop at the end of November. We need feedback from the science data user types. Elena Pourmal sent a list of users. The survey will be sent to them also.
- Allan Doyle reported on the WMS RFC. No change. We are waiting for results of process discussion at the Nov meeting. Then we will resolve the next steps for the WMS RFC.
- Vegetation Classification RFC: Rich talked with Betsy Middleton about the NASA review of this FGDC draft standard. Betsy says that she has no resources for a NASA-wide review. No process to collect NASA review. She has sent out email about this draft standard, asking for reviews but has not received any replies. She will send her review in. She noted that this draft standard is a re-engagement of the categorization vs classification. This standard is more oriented to mapping than is possible for remote sensing data. Betsy didn’t know if anyone in the GIO office was involved in the review of this standard. Betsy reports to HQ staff who are supportive of Betsy’s role in this but she has no funding to get reviews. John Evans said that GIO has access to the OGC-NASA email list and that is about all. Doubtful that the GIO can help with the NASA inputs for this review. However, this draft standard is moving forward through the FGDC process. Should the SPG send out the draft standard and ask for reviews as a Tech Note? Rich and Yonsook will contact Don F. and talk to him about next steps.
- Siri Jodha discussed the possibility of an RFC for Reflectance Terminology. He sent email referencing a paper to discuss this to the SPG email list. Good example of best practice. Suitable as Tech Note RFC? Siri Jodha will send email to author of article asking what the interest is in submitting the Reflectance Terminology as a Tech Note.
- Helen reported that Ross Swick expects to complete the Backtrack RFC by Nov. He is attending the meeting.
