Notes/Discussion:
- The action items from July telecon were discussed. Most of the actions needed to be delayed until Sept telecon because of the difficulty in contacting people who were on vacation.
* The next ES DSWG meeting will be on October 25-27 in the DC area. Some plenary sessions with working group breakouts. SPG will have 4 breakouts. After much discussion, SPG members agreed to discuss the following topics at the 4 breakouts :
- Process issues
- What parts of HDF4/HDF5/HDF-EOS should be put through the standards process and who will put them through
- REASON PIs potential standards
- Joint time with Reuse and Infusion groups. How to cross post information and how to build on each other’s work.
- Oct meeting speakers – Harlan Onsrud is a possibility. Also Chaitan Baru (San Diego), PI for NSF funded GEON. Anyone with any other ideas for speakers should contact Rich.
- Who is not coming to the October meeting? Ron Kwok has conflict with an another meeting at GSFC the same week. He will mostly be at the other meeting but will come to the ES DSWG meeting part of the time. Glenn Cunningham is not coming either.
- Kathy Fontaine has asked all working group chairs to provide time estimates n the level of participation by REASON members. If you are doing any other SPG related activity besides attending telecons & meetings, please let Rich know by Fri Sept 2. Rich will also send separate email to the SPG list with this info.
- The ECHO RFC Initial Review telecon was held on August 30 with the ECHO team. ECHO team was advised to submit revised ECHO RFC which has high level implementation overview (without implementation details) as a Tech Note and then a series of Tech Notes which are interface specifications.
- AGU Session – Siri Jodha Khalsa is co-chair with Rich Ullman. Emphasis is on methods (interfaces, file formats, etc.) for data sharing that could yield potential community standards. We will need about 10 talks for the session. Presenters need to submit abstract by Sept 9. No papers are required, just presentation slides later. Please start recruiting talks. If potential author is not member of AGU, then Rich or Siri Jodha can provide membership number and sponsor the abstract.
- Ming discussed who he should be contacting at NSF and what kind of collaboration are we looking for. We need to pin down what kind of interaction we want before getting names of who to contact. Types of desired interaction: (1) infor exchange (2) discuss whether there are any areas of potential collaboration. One possibility of where to get more insight into NSF activities is the www.fgit.org website. NSF and NCSA are funding an fgit workshop Oct 6-7 in the DC area.
- New machine status – the SPG website was moved to the new machine, Kathy.gsfc.nasa.gov. All SPG related email lists have been moved to the GSFC listerv. Please start using those email lists. The old ones will be phased out after a month.
- The next two SPG telecons are on Wed Sept 21 and Wed Oct 12
