SPG Telecon Notes for Aug 19, 2009 3pm ET telecon

Attendees: Rich Ullman, Yonsook Enloe, Peter Leonard, Ananth Rao, Allan Doyle, Helen Conover, Daniel Jacob, John Scialdone, Glenn Cunningham, Siri Jodha Khalsa, Emily Law, Ed Armstrong

Next SPG Telecons:

  • Wed Sept 9, 2009 at 3pm ET (discuss Oct meeting planning only)
  • Wed Sept 23, 2009 at 3pm ET

Action Items:

  • Sept 9 – Ed & Emily will ask JPL colleague about giving a talk about a candidate reference architecture for decadal survey mission data systems at the SPG breakout at the Oct ESDSWG meeting
  • Sept 9 – Rich will ask Dan Marinelli to give a talk about a candidate reference architecture for the decadal survey mission data systems at the Oct meeting

Notes/Discussion:

  • The July SPG Web Services workshop went very well. Many attendees commented that it was the best workshop at the ESIP Federation meeting. Much thanks to Allan for spearheading the organizing. All the presentations and meeting summary are on the SPG website.
  • The October ESDSWG meeting will be held on Oct 20-22 in Wilmington, Delaware – probably at the Doubletree hotel. The contracts have not been signed yet. Yonsook will send email about hotel blocking for the Oct meeting as soon as Frank notifies us that the contracts are signed and the hotel room block is open.
  • We have 3 themes for potential SPG breakouts:
    • (1) Reference Architecture & potential core mandatory standards at key points (could take more than one breakout to discuss)
    • (2) AURA Experience and how it can apply to community building with the Decadal Survey mission community
    • (3) Web services workshop – mini version
  • Ed and Emily have at least one candidate in mind for a reference architecture talk. They will invite them to the Oct meeting. Rich will ask Dan Marinelli from the ESDIS project about his participation in the reference architecture talks/discussion.
  • Allan has already asked couple of potential speakers for a mini web services session if they would be available for October. He will ask them now.
  • Frank is also looking for speakers for lunch time – if he can get the food paid for by meeting support funds. If he can do that, he will need speakers and he could fund the lunch speakers travel for the meeting.
  • NetCDF issues – Rich will talk to Ben Domenico to let him know that SPG is not a spec development organization like the OGC. The SPG only endorses already developed and working specs. After Ben completes his writeup of the NetCDF-CF spec, and it becomes OGC approved, we’ll probably need to have that re-submitted to the SPG. We could then have the RFC package point to the OGC spec. The NetCDF spec that has already been endorsed by the SPG does not contain CF with it.
  • DAP 2 to HDF 5 Mapping Tech Note status – Allan reported that we have 2 reviews in and 3 more are promised. The TWG will move forward after the 3 additional reviews come in.
  • AURA Experience – Helen reported that the HDF Group and Rama reviewed the Tech Note. 3 positive reviews. Cheryl has invited Cheryl to the Oct meeting but has not heard back from her yet.
  • Chris Lynnes 3 Tech Notes – Ananth noted that we have received 4 reviews, all positive. The TWG will meet immediately after the SPG today to move forward.
  • ICARTT RFC – Daniel reported that the TWG has identified a set of expert reviewers to ask to review the document. They are ready to proceed as soon as they hear back from Gao about his response to the initial review comments
  • John Scialdone said he received responses from Lola on the SERF comments. He will send to the SPG email list
  • IOOS DMAC status – Daniel reported that IOOS DMAC suspended their standards process until after the Nov meeting. He has a telecon scheduled with Anne Ball (DMAC Chair) next week to discuss their status.
  • SIF update – Siri Jodha reported that the SIF is reviewing the contents of the standards registry and trying to validate everything in it. The GEO task, Data Integration and Analysis (lead : Rick Lawford) and the GEO Task, Data Metadata and Products Harmonization (lead: Ken McDonald) will be having a 2 day workshop the week before the GEO Plenary in Nov. The SIF group will also participate in the workshop. The actual dates of the 2 day Nov workshop is Nov 11-12.
